ECU Career Fair pic The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported the leading occupations held by women in the U.S. workforce in 2009.

The BLS estimated roughly 66 million women, over the age of 16, were employed in 2009. The Women's Bureau (WB) estimates that of these employed women, around 75% held full-time positions and the remaining 25% had part-time jobs.

The 10 leading occupations were:

Weekly earnings were reported for the occupations on the list, which included 20 job titles. Findings estimate that the average weekly income of employed women was $657.

The data collected also shed light on employment in relation to gender in the U.S. For example, women held the majority of positions in the following fields:

  • 97.9% of customer service representatives
  • 96.8 % of secretaries and administrative assistants
  • 92.0% of registered nurses

On the other hand, the lowest female presence in an occupation, at 34 percent, was in "managers, all others" positions, which ranked 15th on the list.
